CONCACAF - Caribbean Comedy

In 1994, Barbados were drawn to meet Grenada in a cup match. Coming into the second-leg, Barbados needed to win the game by two clear goals to go through to the next round.

With 5 minutes to go, Barbados were leading 2-1, and going out of the tournament. In the tournament rules however, it was stated that if the match went to penalty kicks, the winner would be awarded a 2-0 victory.

Barbados realised that they were unlikely to score the necessary goal against the 11-man Grenada defence, and that they had much more chance of winning the game by 2 goals by letting the match finish a draw and winning the resulting penalty shoot-out!

So, the Barbados side suddenly turned around and deliberately scored an own goal, to make the score 2-2 and take the match to a penalty shoot-out!

Grenada, however, suddenly realised what was going on, and decided to score an own goal themselves to let Barbados win the match 3-2 but lose the tie overall.

For the remaining minutes of the game, the crowd watched as the Barbados team desperately defended the Grenadan goal as the Grenadan team tried their utmost to score an own-goal to win the game!

The game eventually did go to penalties, and Barbados went on to win and go through to the next round of the cup!
