Branagh, the star of films such as Much Ado About Nothing, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and Wild Wild West, grew up in Northern Ireland supporting his local team, Linfield.

Having moved to England to pursue his acting career, he began to follow London club Tottenham Hotspur during his university days. Because his career takes him around the world, he is often only able to follow his teams on television.

Branagh recently confessed that his fantasy was to be in a film playing a professional footballer in the mould of his favourite player, Stuart Pearce. He said: "I think I could be the amazing guy who, at 38, is still in the game. A local hero, very sexy, very strong, an amazing dribbler of the ball."
