On Sunday 22nd May, the 2005 MasterCard Beijing Community Cup reached a thrilling climax as the sun began to set over the Workers Stadium.

The results however, unlike in most sporting contests, are all but incidental! According to organizers, the true measure of the competition's success was the number of smiling faces amongst players and spectators - men, women and children who turned out in a tremendous show of support for their community.
After 162 matches, played by 48 teams, the one-day, 5-a-side football competition stands to raise a significant amount of money for this year’s worthy causes - Beijing Hui Ling and United for UNICEF.
With a great deal of accounting still to do, early estimates by the organisers predict that the contributions to charity made by the tournament will be more than double that of the last Community Cup event. The growth is predominantly attributed to two factors: the involvement of title and gold sponsors MasterCard International and Accenture and a 50% increase in the number of teams participating.
In addition the event’s organizers China ClubFootball and the British Chamber of Commerce in China also extended their thanks to the three secondary sponsors, 10 supporting suppliers and five prize donors who made generous contributions to the event and to Zhang Lu, the General Manager of Beijing Guo’an who also attended the event in a show of support by the city’s professional team.
The end of the tournament does not, however, signal an end to the fundraising. Thanks to the involvement of United for UNICEF, there will be a prize draw shortly before the Manchester United vs Beijing Guo’an match in July this year, offering entrants the chance to win an MUFC signed ball and other special prizes.
Those who took part in the 2005 MasterCard Beijing Community Cup already have tickets and a chance of winning - those that would like to join them will have a chance to do so in the near future. In addition, to expand the reach of the fundraising to a national scale, an SMS competition with a first prize of a signed Manchester United shirt will be announced shortly!
